Verdict: MiniMax H3 is the model to use today for short, cinematic clips with sound, and you can run it yourself. Atlas is the model to watch for anything spatial: longer camera-controlled sequences, reconstruction from photos, and 3D files you can export. They overlap only at the edges. This is an independent comparison, not affiliated with World Labs or MiniMax.

What each model is

MiniMax H3, also branded Hailuo 3.0, was released on July 31, 2026 as an omni-modal video model: text, image, video and audio share one context, and it outputs 4 to 15 second clips at native 2K and 24 fps with 32 kHz stereo audio, including lip-synced dialogue in 11 languages (MarkTechPost). The 33-billion-parameter weights are open, and it runs on fal, ComfyUI and MiniMax’s own API (fal). On September 2, 2026 a research variant, H3-World, was reported: by training only 0.199 percent of the parameters on 8,000 game samples, MiniMax turned H3 into an interactive model with character and camera control (AI Briefs).

Atlas is World Labs’ omni world model, announced September 1, 2026: a multimodal autoregressive diffusion transformer that generates video up to 1440p and one minute along an explicit camera path and reconstructs 3D scenes as point clouds and Gaussian splats from one to 100+ images (The Decoder). “Omni” means two different things

Both companies use the word, and it is worth separating them.

For MiniMax, omni-modal means the model consumes and produces several media types in one context: a video clip with its own audio, conditioned on text, an image or a reference video. The unifying dimension is media.

For World Labs, omni world model means one model handles generation, reconstruction and simulation of 3D space. The unifying dimension is geometry. Atlas takes depth maps, point clouds and camera paths as inputs; H3 takes audio.

That is the whole comparison in miniature. H3 is a better filmmaking tool; Atlas is a better spatial tool.

H3 wins on pixels per frame and on sound. Atlas wins on duration and on the fact that the output includes the scene itself, not just a view of it. Splat output from Atlas opens in the free splat viewer and imports into engines; H3 output is a video file.

H3-World vs Atlas as world models

H3-World is the more direct comparison, and it is instructive. MiniMax showed that a strong video model can be adapted into an interactive world model with a tiny fraction of trainable parameters (AI Briefs). That puts it in the Genie 3 family: real-time-ish interaction, frames as output, no geometry. Atlas took the opposite route, pretraining from scratch with 3D as a native modality. Whether the adaptation route can ever produce exportable geometry is an open question; the pretraining route already does, at the cost of being closed and early-access.

Access and pricing

H3 is the most accessible model in this series: open weights, multiple hosted APIs, and community tooling (fal). Official per-second pricing varies by host and we have not verified a single figure. Atlas has no public API and no price (Implicator); the World Labs model you can pay for today is Marble at about $1.20 per world, detailed on the pricing page.

  • Self-hosted or fine-tuned video generation: H3, because the weights are open.

Running H3 yourself vs waiting for Atlas

Open weights change the calculation for technical teams. H3 can be self-hosted, fine-tuned on your own footage, and wired into ComfyUI graphs, and its hosted versions on fal and the MiniMax API give you a fallback when your own GPUs are busy (fal). For a studio that wants control over its stack, that is a decisive advantage today.

Atlas offers none of that yet: no weights, no paper, no API, and an early-access programme whose partners are unnamed (Implicator). What it offers instead is a capability H3 cannot be fine-tuned into: explicit 3D reconstruction with exportable geometry. If your pipeline ends in a file that an engine or a simulator loads, no amount of open-weights video model substitutes for that.

A combined pipeline

Many teams will not choose. A practical split:

  1. Generate or reconstruct the environment as a world with the World API today, Atlas later. Export the .spz.
  2. Render establishing shots and camera moves from the world, so every location shot agrees with every other.
  3. Use H3 for performance shots, dialogue and anything that needs audio, using frames from step 2 as image references so the look matches.
  4. Composite in your editor.

The world costs about $1.20 on Marble as of September 3, 2026 (pricing); H3 costs depend on the host.

Quality signals you can check yourself

Because H3 is open, you can test it on your own footage before committing, and you should. Prompt it with a location you know, compare the geometry across two generations, and note how often walls, doors and furniture move. That is the failure mode a world model is supposed to eliminate, and it is the test to repeat on Atlas once you have access. Until then, Marble worlds give a preview of what geometry-anchored output looks like: generate one through the image to 3D world tool and orbit it in the viewer.

What to watch next

  • H3-World as a product. If MiniMax ships the interactive variant with an API, it competes with Genie 3 and Odyssey-2 rather than with Atlas; see Atlas vs Genie 3.
  • Atlas audio. Any announcement of sound generation would narrow the gap for cinematic work.
  • Atlas pricing. Per-second video pricing from World Labs would make the cost comparison concrete.

Licensing

Open weights do not always mean unrestricted commercial use; check the licence attached to the H3 release before shipping outputs. Atlas outputs will be governed by whatever terms World Labs attaches to early access, which are unpublished. For Marble, the World API terms on the developer platform apply.

Bottom line

MiniMax H3 is a superb video model with open weights, and H3-World shows how quickly video models can become interactive. Atlas is a different kind of system, built around geometry rather than media, and its outputs are files a pipeline can use. Most studios will end up using both: one for the shot, one for the space.
