Search for “atlas ai model” or “atlas model” and Google has to guess which of half a dozen products you mean. A world model from World Labs, a humanoid robot from Boston Dynamics, a web browser from OpenAI and a cloud database from MongoDB all share the name, and underneath them sits the older meaning, a book of maps. This page sorts them out so you can get to the right one quickly. It is written by an independent site that covers the World Labs model and is not affiliated with any of the companies named. Product names appear here only to tell the different “Atlas” products apart, and each row in the table links to the company’s own site.

If the phrase in your head is “atlas AI model”, you almost certainly mean the first row. The robot has AI inside it but is hardware; the browser uses an AI model but is not one; the database is neither.

Atlas, the World Labs world model

This is the Atlas this site is about. World Labs, the spatial intelligence company co-founded by Fei-Fei Li, announced it on September 1, 2026 as “the world’s first multimodal world model that generates image and video frames with pixel-perfect camera control and reconstructs them in 3D” (World Labs on X).

In plain terms it is a single neural network, a multimodal autoregressive diffusion transformer, that does three jobs (SiliconANGLE):

  1. Generates video up to 1440p and one minute long, where you supply the camera path as geometry rather than describing it in a prompt.
  2. Reconstructs 3D scenes as point clouds and Gaussian splats from as few as two or three photos.
  3. Simulates environments for robots, by rebuilding a real space from phone video and rendering what a robot’s camera would see inside it.

It is not a product you can sign up for. As of September 7, 2026 it is in early access for select partners with no public price or API; the shipping World Labs product is Marble. The full explainer is What is the Atlas world model, the company profile is World Labs, and the difference between the two models is in Atlas vs Marble.

How to tell you are looking at this one: the words “world model”, “spatial intelligence”, “Gaussian splat”, “Marble” or “Fei-Fei Li” appear nearby.

Atlas, the Boston Dynamics robot

Boston Dynamics’ Atlas is the humanoid robot that has been doing backflips in viral videos for a decade. The hydraulic version dates from 2013; the company retired it and unveiled a fully electric redesign in April 2024 (Boston Dynamics). The production version was shown at CES on January 5, 2026, with first fleets committed to Hyundai’s robotics application centre and to Google DeepMind (The Robot Report).

The confusion with World Labs is understandable, because the two Atlases touch the same problem from opposite ends. Boston Dynamics builds the body; World Labs’ Atlas can build the simulated room the body trains in. World Labs’ launch demos showed exactly that, reconstructing real spaces and simulating robots moving through them (SiliconANGLE). There is no announced partnership between the companies; the overlap is a use case, which we cover in robotics real-to-sim.

How to tell: “humanoid”, “Hyundai”, “hydraulic”, “electric” or a video of a robot lifting a car part.

ChatGPT Atlas, the OpenAI browser

ChatGPT Atlas is OpenAI’s web browser, released for macOS on October 21, 2025, with Windows, iOS and Android versions announced to follow (OpenAI, Wikipedia). It is Chromium-based and puts ChatGPT in a sidebar, remembers your browsing to answer questions about it, and has an agent mode that can carry out tasks on web pages.

It is not an AI model. It is an application that calls OpenAI’s models. If you searched “atlas ai” after seeing OpenAI news, this is what you want, and nothing on this site will help you with it.

How to tell: “browser”, “sidebar”, “agent mode”, “Chromium” or “OpenAI”.

MongoDB Atlas, the database

MongoDB Atlas is the managed cloud version of the MongoDB document database, running on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud (MongoDB). It shows up in “atlas model” searches because MongoDB documents are described by data models and because Atlas has added vector search features for AI applications. Developers who type “atlas model” while thinking about schemas are looking for MongoDB’s documentation, not a world model.

How to tell: “cluster”, “collection”, “vector search”, “AWS” or a pricing page in dollars per hour.

Atlas, the book of maps

The oldest meaning. An atlas is a bound collection of maps, a usage that dates to Gerardus Mercator’s 1595 volume, which put the Titan Atlas on its title page (Wikipedia). Searches for “atlas world” and “atlas world map” usually want this: a world map, a country index, or an interactive globe. This site does not have one. Wikipedia’s Atlas of the World, Google Maps and OpenStreetMap are the places to go.

There is a small irony here that explains the naming collision. A traditional atlas is a model of the world drawn by hand. World Labs’ Atlas is a model of the world learned from data, and “world model” is the technical term for it. Both companies, and Boston Dynamics with its load-bearing robot, reached for the Titan who carries the world on his shoulders.

Quick decision guide

  • You saw a video of a robot: Boston Dynamics Atlas.
  • You saw a browser with a chat sidebar: ChatGPT Atlas.
  • You are writing database code: MongoDB Atlas.
  • You want a map: a world atlas, not this site.
  • You saw “world model”, “3D”, “Gaussian splat”, “camera control”, “Fei-Fei Li” or “World Labs”: the Atlas world model, and you are in the right place. Start with What is the Atlas world model, check how to get early access, or see how it compares with other world models in the comparison hub.

Why this site is called atlasworldmodel.com

Because the two-word name “Atlas” alone is unsearchable, this site uses the full phrase World Labs uses, “Atlas world model”, in its domain, titles and headings. When you see that phrase, it refers to the World Labs model and nothing else. Everything here is independent and sourced; see about this site and the FAQ for how facts are checked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Atlas AI model?

If you mean the world model, Atlas is World Labs’ omni world model announced September 1, 2026. It generates camera-controlled video up to 1440p and reconstructs 3D scenes as point clouds and Gaussian splats from a few photos. Several other AI products also use the name; see the table on this page.

Is World Labs’ Atlas the same as Boston Dynamics’ Atlas?

No. Boston Dynamics’ Atlas is a humanoid robot. World Labs’ Atlas is a software model. The only link is that World Labs demonstrated Atlas simulating environments for robots, which is a use case, not a product connection.

Is ChatGPT Atlas an AI model?

No. ChatGPT Atlas is OpenAI’s web browser with ChatGPT built in, released for macOS on October 21, 2025. It is not a generative model and has nothing to do with World Labs.

Why do so many AI products use the name Atlas?

Atlas is the Titan who holds up the sky in Greek myth, and by extension a word for something that carries or maps the world. Companies building models of the world, robots that carry loads, or tools that map data all reach for the same metaphor.

I searched "atlas world" and landed here. Where is the world atlas?

This site covers the Atlas world model, not geography. For a world atlas try Wikipedia’s Atlas of the World or a mapping service such as Google Maps or OpenStreetMap.

Is this site affiliated with World Labs, Boston Dynamics or OpenAI?

No. atlasworldmodel.com is an independent guide. Product names are trademarks of their respective owners and are used here only to identify them.
